CPSC Method on Lead Testing in Metals

CPSC staff have issued a revision to the  method for testing lead in homogeneous metals.  The preferred methods remain chemical digestion and analysis by Inductively Coupled Plasma – Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES).  Inductively Coupled Plasma–Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) and Flame Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (FLAA) and Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (GFAA) are also acceptable under appropriate conditions.  Significantly, XRF testing is considerated “indeterminate” and analysis by ICP must be performed if the results are within 30% of the CPSC limit of 100 ppm for lead in children’s product.
