Green Chemistry Awards Lead to Improved Consumer Products

Professor Robert M. Waymouth, Stanford University, and Dr. James L. Hedrick, IBM Almaden Research Center shared the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Academic Award for their work in developing organocatalysts for efficient metal-free synthesis of biodegradable polyesters and other polymers.  According to EPA, they also “developed organic catalysts to depolymerize poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) quantitatively, allowing recycling for PET from bottles into new bottles as a way to mitigate the millions of pounds of PET that plague our landfills.”  The Academic Award was also shared with Geoffrey W. Coates, Cornell University whose work has lead to Bisphenol A-free liners for food and beverages.
